The University Hospitals at Leipzig University and Technische Universität Dresden provide comprehensive tertiary health care for Saxony’s population. Ranking among the top 10 hospitals in Germany, they combine high-performance medicine with outstanding teaching and research. Both Departments of Pediatrics (Leipzig and Dresden) unite the entire pediatric spectrum with in-house access to specialized units such as pediatric radiology, pediatric surgery, perinatal care and social pediatrics. Joint health care of Leipzig University and Technische Universität is provided by the Saxonian Newborn Screening Center and the Saxonian Immunodeficiency Screening Center Dresden Leipzig. Furthermore, Leipzig hosts the specialized Center for Pediatric Research Leipzig (CPL), which closely links clinical and basic scientific research persuing a translational approach in order to create new effective therpies for many diseases.
In line with SaxoChiLD’s focus, both University Hospitals have implemented interdisciplinary programs and clinical infrastructures for patients with obesity, immune disorders and rare diseases, including state-of-the-art diagnostic units and access to new treatment approaches. Further innovative examples of health care are interdisciplinary wards in pediatrics with pediatric surgery and child and adolescent psychiatry (Leipzig University), the only specialized inpatient ward for tic and obsessive-compulsive disorders in Germany (Technische Universität Dresden), and the largest clinical research unit for autism spectrum disorders. Expertise on adherence, effectiveness, and risks of pharmacotherapy in children is a focus of the Drug Safety Center Leipzig, which investigates predictors modulating effectivity and avoidable risks in pharmacotherapy.
